From Fierce or Fearful to Friendly: A Shaping Program for Dogs, Cats and Beyond
JESÚS ROSALES-RUIZ, University of North Texas

Fearful and aggressive behavior, although amenable to reinforcement control, are generally regarded as elicited behaviors. That is, they are triggered by the environment and considered natural reactions to certain antecedent conditions. When animals become excessively fierce or fearful it is considered a behavior problem and the treatment of choice is, of course, some variation of respondent conditioning, namely, desensitization and counterconditioning. Alternatively, fearful and aggressive behavior, although initially elicited by particular events, may also be seen as successful operants captured and maintained by negative reinforcement. They remove or distance aversive events. This view offers an alternative treatment to commonly used respondent procedures. Distancing can be used as reinforcer to to shape friendly behavior that replaces fearful or aggressive behavior. This presentation will demonstrate how the shaping procedure works and discuss some implications for applied and basic behavior analysis.
