Issues in Credentialing Professionals in Applied Behavior Analysis
JIM JOHNSTON, Auburn University

Issues associated with credentialing professional applied behavior analysts have been receiving considerable attention in recent years. Although the BACB certification program has been in operation for ten years now and has been successful by every measure, ABAI has encouraged pursuit of licensure. Similarities and differences between these two forms of credentialing are not obvious, however, and it is important to appreciate the consequences of investing in one or the other approach. This presentation reviews the history of credentialing in the field of behavior analysis and distinguishes between certification and licensure. The pros and cons of each type of credential will be examined, and recommendations for ways of protecting the interests of ABA professionals will be offered.
